In New Jersey, Tesla Model 3 owners are part of a growing community of electric vehicle enthusiasts dedicated to sustainable living. The Model 3, known as the world’s best-selling EV, spans several model years from 2017 to 2026, reflecting advancements in battery technology and performance. Whether you own a pre-Highland version or one of the newly refreshed models, your vehicle can make a difference through our donation program.
The Model 3 transition from nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) batteries to lithium iron phosphate (LFP) packs marked a significant evolution in battery chemistry. Owners looking to retire their EVs can contribute to a cleaner future while gaining insights into their vehicle's state of health (SoH). Every contribution helps support the infrastructure for electric mobility across New Jersey, creating a more sustainable environment.
📖Generation guide
Pre-Highland • 2017-2023
This generation includes Standard Range (SR), Long Range AWD, and Performance trims. Pre-2021 models feature NCM battery packs, while those from 2021 onward utilize LFP technology from CATL, ensuring increased lifespan and stability.
Highland Refresh • 2024-present
The Highland refresh introduces a revised design with improved functionality, including ambient lighting and a rear touchscreen. This generation enhances user experience and maintains Tesla’s commitment to innovation.
Known issues by generation
Model 3 owners should be aware of some known issues by generation. Early-build models from 2017-2018 may exhibit paint defects and panel-gap variances due to Fremont’s production ramp-up. From 2018-2020, many units experienced a common issue with the MCU eMMC flash memory, leading to a recall and subsequent class-action settlement. Additionally, both generations have reported wear on the front lower control-arm bushing, known as 'Whompy Wheel.' Battery degradation patterns also differ significantly between NCM and LFP packs, which influences the vehicle's resale value and donation potential.
Donation value by condition + generation
When assessing the donation value of a Tesla Model 3, trim level and battery State of Health (SoH) are critical factors. Low-mileage Performance trims often retain a strong resale value, while Standard Range models with pre-2021 free Supercharging eligibility can enhance donation appeal. Long Range AWD variants with less than 50,000 miles and an SoH above 90% frequently qualify for Form 8283 Section B, indicating a potential donation value of $5,000 or more.
Donation process for this model
Donating your Tesla Model 3 involves specific logistics to ensure a smooth process. It is essential to prepare the vehicle for tow by ensuring the auxiliary 12V battery is in good condition, as it can trigger low-voltage warnings. We require flatbed towing for EVs, and you won’t need to drain any fuel, as EVs operate differently. When donating, charging cables should be included with the vehicle. Please note that federal EV tax credits do not apply to donated vehicles.
New Jersey regional notes
New Jersey boasts a robust charging network ideal for Tesla Model 3 owners, ensuring convenient access to charging stations across the state. The local climate can impact battery range, particularly in extreme temperatures. Additionally, recipients of your donated Tesla may qualify for a $15,000 used EV tax credit, making your donation even more valuable in supporting sustainable transportation.
